Remus Ruby

Obituary From The Cameron Herald 13 Sept 1880:
Died on the 8th inst. at his father's residence near Ad Hall, in Milam Co, of typhoid fever, after an illness of ten days Remus, second son of Mr. A.S. Ruby, aged 19 Years, 8 months and 14 days.
Our little community has been stirred to its profoundest depths by this sad occurence. There are few whose demise would have awakened so much of genuine heartfelt sympathy. Endeared to all by his amiable disposition, with many he had cemented warm attachments and delightful friendships. Physically almost a giant, he united the strength of the lion with the gentleness of the lamb. So well adapted as he was by a splendid physique and mental aptitude to enjoy the pleasures of life, the ardor of youth was admirably tempered by the sober discretion of mature age.
Each of us feels that he has sustained a personal loss, and the vacancy he has left will long remain unfilled. That the angel of death should pass by the aged and infirm, or the youth of feeble, mental and physical constitution, or him of unstable and doubtful morals, and select for his victim one whose noble qualities so well fitted him to adore social life, and perform a high and useful mission, indeed is a mystery we cannot fathom. Truly the ways of Providence are inscrutible. It is hard to comprehend the wisdom, and discern the mercies of God in such mournful dispensations. Yet we would not, if we could, doubt that loving kindness which is so manifest over all his works. In due time, we question not, even in these dark and agonizing heart-trials, under the light of coming events, or in that of a perfect revelation in a future state, his tender mercies in all his dealings with the children of men will be fully vindicated.
Our lamented young friend was born in Daviess County, KY, on the 25th day of Dec, 1860. In his 16th year his parents removed to this state, and settled first at Port Sullivan in this county. Subsequently he accompanied them to this neighborhood where he has resided until his fatal illness, performing his whole duty with exemplary fidelity at home, and winning universal esteem by the amiable suavity of his manners, and the many noble qualities of his head and heart.
A few weeks ago, as if in merciful preparation for the unexpected summons, God graciously pleased to receive him into the fold of the Divine Shepard, and we rejoice in the assurance that he is an eternal gainer by our temporary loss.
This precious consolation, together with the sympathetic tears of the whole community will in some measure comfort his stricken father and heart broken mother.
