Ellis Martin
LAWNDALE - Mr. Ellis Martin, 76, of Sugar Hill Road, died Thursday, March 1,
2001, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born Feb. 22, 1925, the son of the late
David "Dave" and Blumo Doris Lewis Martin. He retired from J.P. Stevens in
Shelby and later worked for Sherman Textiles in Lincolnton. He was a member of
Plains View Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, and a member of
Disabled American Veterans. He served in the Army during World War II in the
Pacific Theater and received two purple hearts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thurman
Reed Martin and J.T. Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shuford Martin of the home; one daughter and
one son-in-law, Carolyn and Don Dillingham of Grover; one sister, Mae Lena
Brittain of Lawndale; two granddaughters, Kimberly Cloyd and her husband, Ray,
of Gastonia and Rhonda Benfield and her husband, Chris, of Lawndale; one
great-granddaughter, Rebecca Benfield; and two great-grandsons, Joshua Cloyd and
Matthew Cloyd.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Plains View Baptist Church with the
Revs. Bill Ewing and Charles "Buddy" Freeman. The body will be placed in the
church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.
