Dwight Beam Hord
LAWNDALE — Dr. Dwight Beam Hord, 79, of 118 Hord Road, died
Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Maurice Beam
Hord and Ellen Lenore Harmon Hord. He taught and coached for one year at
Piedmont High School and practiced dentistry for 48 years in his hometown of
Lawndale. Dr. Hord received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from
UNC-Chapel Hill in 1948 and graduated with UNC’s first dental class in 1954. He
was a lifetime member of Lawndale Baptist Church, where he taught the Can-Do
Sunday School Class and served as deacon for many years. He was a member and
past president of Lawndale Lions Club and was Lion of the Year in 1979, member
and past president of the NC Dental Association, served on the board of
directors during the formation of the Cleveland Vocational Workshop, former
member of the board of directors for Upper Cleveland Rescue, Lawndale Citizen of
the Year, honored by Lawndale Baptist Church for community service on Dr. Dwight
Hord Appreciation Day, member of Lawndale Masonic Lodge 486 for 50 years and was
member of Lawndale American Legion Post 302. He attended Cornell University for
officer training and served as deck officer aboard the USS Lumen during World
War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Anne
Cline Hord; a brother, Robert Hord; and a sister, Frances Grigg.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Jean Hord of Charlotte;
three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ellen and Rick Wease of Lawndale, Anne
Walker of Charlotte and Jean and Dave Roberts of Boone; eight grandchildren,
Tyler Hord, Chuck Wease and wife, Mandy, Ricky Wease, Kimberly Wease, Max
Borders, Abby Walker, Ivy Mauney and Davis Roberts; and three
great-grandchildren, Andrew, Kaitlyn and Caleb Wease.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Lawndale Baptist Church with the
Revs. John F. Bridges and Reginald Dawkins officiating. The body will be placed
in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Stamey Funeral Home.
