Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Bridges Hamrick
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Lib) Bridges Hamrick, 78, of 148
Ball Park Road, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center
in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Ola Smawley Bridges and
Ernest Durham Bridges.
Mrs. Hamrick and her husband, William Dixon Hamrick, were co-owners of Hamrick’s
Supermarket in Lawndale for over 30 years. Mrs. Hamrick graduated from Piedmont
School as the valedictorian of the class of 1941. She attended Elon College.
During World War II, she worked at Fort Bragg for the motor transport district.
She was also an executive secretary at Cleveland Mills in Lawndale. She was an
active member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale where she served as
church clerk for 14 years and as a Sunday school teacher. In addition, she was
past secretary for the Upper Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Hamrick was a
charter member of the Lawndale Historical Society where she served as secretary
until recently. In the years since her retirement, she has been a volunteer at
Fallston Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dixon Hamrick and one brother,
the Rev. Harold Bridges.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Everett Hord of
Lawndale and Nancy and Greg Isenhour of New House; one brother, Myles Bridges of
Oak Island; one sister, Ernestine Bishop of Shelby; four grandchildren, Joseph
Everett Hord Jr., Dixon James Hord, Daniel Gregory Isenhour and Laura Elizabeth
Isenhour.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale
with the Revs. Ronell Owensby and Ben Davis officiating. The body will be placed
in the church 30 minutes before the funeral. Burial will follow in Rose Hill
Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home
in Fallston.
