Cleveland Co, NC formed in 1841 from
Rutherford & Lincoln Counties. Named for Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, a
leader of the western Carolina frontier & a hero at the Battle of Kings

1841 - First county business conducted at the home of William Weathers
November 8,
1841 - First court held in Cleveland County. Judge Mathis E. Manley
presides
1842 -
Shelby established as the county seat. Named after Colonel Isaac Shelby,
also a hero at the Battle of Kings Mountain

- Daniel Brooks, free black man joins the Confederate Army
1871 -
Double Shoals Yarn Mill opens
1873 -
Cleveland Cotton Mill Number One opens on Knob Creek, also known as
Schenk, Ramsaur & Company

1874 - Town of Kings Mountain chartered

Cleveland Cotton Mill Number Two opens at Lawndale
